Description

This online archive is designed for researchers, research-based teaching, and students studying the aftermath of World War II.

Source: The National Archives of the UK and The Wiener Library, London

General Editor: Professor Dan Stone, Royal Holloway College, University of London

Here are the essential primary sources covering the politics and administration of the refugee crisis in Europe after World War II as well as the day-to-day survival of the refugees themselves.

Although the War in Europe ended officially in May 1945, the struggle continued for the millions of homeless people who had been displaced by military action, deportation into labour or concentration camps, or local racism and discrimination. The burden of the refugee problem taxed the Allied governments and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) relief groups in their attempts to administer, feed and house a moving people searching for their lost families and a permanent home.

A rapid repatriation programme was organised but many Displaced Persons ("DPs") could not, or refused to, return to their homelands. Emigration programmes struggled against the reluctance of nations outside Europe to assist in the resolution of this humanitarian catastrophe.

Topics covered include:

The source material is supplemented by a chronology of key events, photographs, contemporary documentary film, an introduction to the material and period by the General Editor as well as several essays from other leading scholars in the field. These essays cover the major themes of the material and contain links directly to related documents offering a means of easy access for students unfamiliar with the original materials.

Data Digitization

The process of digitisation and quality control is summarised as follows.

Given the number of pages within this collection, the physical condition of the original documents, variant spellings, typing errors in the original documents and the variety of types of text – type-written letters, carbon copies and hand-written items - some OCR errors are inevitable which may result in incorrect character capture, affecting some full-text search results. However, the high accuracy of metadata capture, as well as the fuzzy search functionality, greatly minimizes the impact such OCR errors may have on your search results.

Metadata

In addition to the data capture of the full text of all items, metadata has been captured to facilitate searching and ensure accessibility of the items within this collection.

Several search indexes have been developed for Post-War Europe: Refugees, Exile and Resettlement, 1945-1950 utilizing this metadata, providing bibliographic details within the Full Citation. The Full Citation appears at the top of the screen in both Image and Reading Views, and includes:

Folder Name: An individual description of the content of a folder of files, e.g. “JRU Co-operation with Other Relief Organisations: Voluntary Societies”.

File Description: An individual description of the content of a file, e.g. “Committee for Jews in Germany: Minutes and Associated Matters, 1945”.

Date: The date on which the item was created.

Document Type: The type of document, e.g. map, newspaper cutting, pamphlet, photograph, etc.

Source: The Institution from which the folder was sourced, either The National Archives of the UK or The Wiener Library, London.

Language: The language(s) in which the items were written, e.g. French or Polish.

Number of pages: The number of pages in an individual document or file.

Document Reference Number: The archival number for each individual item, e.g. HA6A/2/1. Allocated by The National Archives or The Wiener Library or, for un-numbered items within a file, allocated by TL EMEA indexers at the metadata creation stage, e.g. HA6A/2/1/0001.
